Not TMI. . .your B M I!

Body Mass Index

Your Body Mass Index, also known as your BMI,  is a quick and easy way to determine if your weight is proportionate to your height.  You can also use this general number to get an idea if you are at a low or high risk for chronic disease.  Please note that this BMI calculation is not an “etched in stone” kind of number.  Why?  Well, for an elite athlete, their lean muscle mass will be higher than their body fat and this will show high BMI. In this case, BMI would not be a good tool.  Yet, for the general public, lean muscle mass is usually lower than our body fat and our BMI can assist in our weight loss or weight gaining goals.

Please note,  your BMI is only one part of a full health and fitness assessment that you would get from a personal trainer or health professional.  To get a more accurate standing of where you are with your physical health, your professional will also need to measure your resting heart rate, blood pressure and get your body circumference measurements. . .just to name a few.

Many of us have an ideal weight goal that we would love to achieve.  That's the first step but make sure that it is realistic and safe for your body type.  Once you and your health professional have determined your ideal weight, your BMI calculation is a good tool to help you stay on track, even if your trainer is not around.

BMI is calculated by either dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters or dividing body weight in pounds by the square of height in inches and multiplying by 703.

When discussing your BMI with your fitness professional, make sure that you learn what physical state you are currently in.  Understand the numbers, how you got to where you are now and know what you have to do to get to your ideal BMI.  Everyone's body and fitness levels are very different.  So, use this as a general tool and not as a fitness bible.  If you have any questions or comments for me, click on CONTACT and let's see how I can help.
