I could not believe the devastation that the latest tornados have caused throughout our nation! It has been a long time since my hometown of Missouri really  felt a  twister touch down and do any kind of damage in our area.  I remember being a kid on a hot summer day watching the weather switch from sunny, to dark, to rain and then to a tornado right in front of my eyes as we quickly ran downstairs to our basements!

This time, as we all know, the "amazing but damaging" twisters took the lives of over 180 people and left destruction in a huge part of Joplin, MO.  A town I am very familiar with because for years when coming or going to the University of Missouri-Columbia, we had to travel through Joplin.  As a member of the MO track team, we would ALWAYS make a pit stop in Joplin and hit our favorite fast food restaurants and grocery stores before hitting the road.
This year, because of the unprecedented tornado damage in Joplin, MO, their very popular BOOMTOWN Half Marathon will not be held this Saturday, June 11th. This year, Joplin needs help with clean up efforts. Saturday, June 11th will be a day of caring with a memorial service (6:30 a.m. at Memorial Hall - event starting line and now the medical triage center) and then clean-up projects. If you are near the area of Joplin and would like to help, visit for details. If you cannot come but can contribute, please make a donation to the Red Cross or the United Way of Southwest Missouri. (information about the run from Jeff Galloway blog)

My prayers go out to the runners and citizens of Joplin and other areas hit by the devastating storms of recent weeks.
