FAMILY FUN RUN. . . MAKE IT YOUR OWN!

Let's GO! Let's Get Out Their . . . with Your Family!

I have been a runner for over 20 years and being a runner has been the one constant thing in my life. Whether in elementary school, college, working, marriage and having two incredible daughters, I have always found a way to keep running in my daily routine!

I have a pretty active family with both my daughters in Soccer and Karate. My husband, a die-hard golfer and basketball nut, we like to keep things moving and grooving in our household!

Well, my husband recently broke his hand and now his favorite sports are on hold for the next 6 weeks! He came to me and expressed interest in running because, as many of us know, once you break or injure something, it is VERY EASY to get off the "I'm in Shape" band wagon!

So, this weekend after running with my team, I saw a female runner running with her 8 or 9 year old son and it got me thinking, what if I had my whole family run with me? So, I rushed home and announced our 1st Family Fun Run. Don't get me wrong, no one leaped from their seat and said "COOL . . . LET'S GO!" . . . but the didn't say "NO" either! It was quite an interesting experience!

So, I set a time that I knew everyone would be happy with, marked our running trail and had them get their gear and shoes ready to "Rock N Run"!

The one thing that I noticed right away was the excitement in the air my family had while getting ready for the run. I made it VERY clear that this was a Family Fun Run and no one was allowed to compete. Each parent took the kid that they could hang with and we grabbed our dog as well! I broke up the run in increments of 5-10 minutes just to make sure everyone was on pace and feeling pretty good. I have to admit, I really enjoyed running with my family and the girls wanted the run to last a little longer! We were all able to share funny stories and talk about our week at work/school and what was ahead for the following week! IF YOU CAN, squeeze in your own family fun run once a week and see what type of reaction you will get. The run can start out as a walk with 2 minute running increments or 1/2 walk, 1/2 jog! Either way, your family will love it and will be pumped to do it again! Great way to keep the family in shape and motivated to start a new week!

Hey, you never know what you will start . . . you may run an entire 5K together! What an impression that will make!
